An affluent suburb located approximately 22 miles east of Dallas, Rockwall is the county seat of Rockwall County. It was named after a rock wall that was found when early settler T.U. Wade was digging for a well and he suggested the town be named after the unique find. Located alongside Lake Ray Hubbard, residents have many water-related recreational activities at their fingertips. Rockwall is a tightly knit community with a home town feel that keeps itself busy with a wide array of activities such as the Rockwell Founder's Day Festival, which is provided free of charge and offers live music entertainment from some of the country’s most famous musicians. Rockwall also hosts salsa dancing and dining within the community at the El Cayote Rojo and holds Rockwall Concert by the Lake events. With so many activities surrounding music, it is little wonder Rockwall is referred to as The Live Music Capital of North Texas. There are also a bunch of community-centered events that are hosted year-round, such as the Home and Garden Show at The Hilton Bella Harbor, the Klassic Rock Sprint Triathlon, or various art fairs and events held at Downtown Rockwall Historic Square.
The Rockwell Independent School District is the top employer of the city. Walmart and Target Corportation are also large employers to local residents. Famous people who have lived in Rockwall include the independently successful actor/musician Musso brothers Masson, Mitchel, and Marc, recording artist Jason Castro of American Idol, and Cliff Harris, former NFL player for the Dallas cowboys. Located in a humid subtropical region, the weather in Rockwall is moderate year-round with temperatures averaging in the mid-sixties.
